Troy, PEF Division 202 Council Leader Mary Brady-Murray took the first step to interest members by holding a meeting at a bowling alley. She decided to go outside-the-box to attract new people and make union participation more inviting. “It’s a really hard thing to do,”


Brady-Murray said. “Members have told me they won’t go to meetings because they don’t want to hang around for three hours and listen to people argue. “They want


meetings where you get your business done and then go on your way. They are willing to do it, but we live in a different age where the old, long, drawn-out discussions turn people away.” Division stewards had mixed

reactions when Brady-Murray suggested the bowling alley venue. But the nearly 70 people who participated enjoyed the brief meeting, food and beverages, followed by a few friendly games. It took place April 20 in Latham, and may go down in Division 202’s history as the start of more productive and enjoyable meetings. The division has more than 1,000


members, so the challenge of how to mobilize more of them remains on Brady-Murray’s mind. She knows it’s going to take more than a good time at a bowling alley. She recruited Penny Howansky and


Ryan Zielinski to maintain the division’s website, and also enlisted Amanda Schongar as the activities chair. Eight new stewards have joined the council, and a newsletter called
