State to hold new primary for congressional candidates June 26
By SHERRY HALBROOK State legislators threw PEF a
fastball this year when it created a separate new state primary in June for parties to select their congressional candidates. Most years, the state holds just
one primary election to resolve contests between candidates vying for party nominations and ballot lines in the November general election. However, in presidential-election
years, such as this is, a primary is held in April to select party candidates for president, if there is a contest for those nominations. This year’s contest was only for the Republican nomination, since the Democrats have settled on nominating President Obama for re- election. Now, a June 26 primary is
scheduled to pick party nominees for the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives. That forces many organizations such as PEF to scramble if they want to endorse candidates before the primary. “This is exceptionally
challenging to do more than two months earlier and when all of the boundaries for congressional and state legislative districts have just been changed following the 2010 Census,” said PEF Legislative Director and Counsel Brian Curran. To add to this “perfect political
storm,” balloting in PEF’s own triennial elections will be underway in June. The new PEF Executive Board will be seated in August. It’s at that August meeting when the board traditionally makes most of the
union’s political endorsements. It will be up to PEF’s
regional Political Action Committees to identify their new congressional and legislative districts, interview the candidates and make endorsement recommendations to
PEF’s statewide PAC. That group will consider those recommendations and make its own to the Executive Board. “Our activists really have their
work cut out for them this year,” Curran said. “It also will be very challenging to alert our members to the need to vote in the June 26 congressional primary and to educate them about the candidates and districts that may be unfamiliar to them.”
