True Balance Involves Mind and Body
W
e often hear of the healthy ben- efits of balance, whether it’s a balanced meal or “life balance” (work versus play). But Eastern traditions also recognize the necessity of a balanced body, says Clay Evans of Knoxville Rolfing. “Yoga, tai chi and other martial arts practitioners understand by their practice how much the body, mind and breath complete one another in balance,” he says. “We cannot sepa- rate our minds from our bodies or our bodies from our minds. True balance can only be found in a balance of all.”
Evans notes
that we spend hours each day negotiat- ing our balance as we move about, although we never think about it. “Our feet find the ground and sense where we are walking,” he says. “Our eyes
tell us where we are going and what obstacles to avoid, and they commu- nicate with our feet to keep us upright. Our hips and pelvic floor are our center of gravity. Our shoulders and arms are counterweights to our legs and hips.” While we “negotiate with gravity”
daily, Evans says, most of us have lost the functional efficiency in the body that balance brings. Rolfing Struc- tural Integration can help restore that balance, he says—strengthening the communication between eyes and feet, for example, and helping the shoulders and hips work more closely together. “Balance of the body is the root to finding balance in our lives,” he says.

“Intuition” Workshop at Gypsy Hands Maryann Breman
M Mary Ann Russell
aryann Breman Russell, RN, and Sara X Griscom, founder of Gypsy Hands, will co-teach a May 19
workshop—“Intuition: Finding It, Listening to It, and Living with It as Our Guiding Light”—designed to help partici- pants connect with themselves and their heart’s joy. Russell and Griscom also will be taking appointments for individu- al healing and consultation.
Russell has long experience in emergency medicine. As an alternative healer she has practiced massage therapy
and studied reflexology at the Polarity (Maine) Realization Center, and advanced craniosacral therapy at the Upledger Institute of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. She considers her greatest healing gift to have come through her study of intuition therapy and soul readings with healer and author Rosalie Deer Heart. “I believe the purpose of our lives is to evolve spiritually, and spiritual guid- ance is simply information connecting us to our path of truth,” she says. Griscom’s extensive experience and research with indigenous healers around the globe led to her create Gypsy Hands, a Knoxville center focused on holistic healing for the body, heart and spirit. Born in Spain and raised in Mexico, she received her call to healing in Guatemala from a Mayan shaman. Her practice includes intuitive consulting, past-life reflections, shamanic healing, energy medi- cine, and Reiki training and certification.
