Center for Peace Hosts Women’s Dance T
Akins, Jazz Pianist, to Play at Yoga Haven
he Center for Peace—a holistic, nondenominational spiritual center in Seymour, Tennessee—is hosting its annual Women’s Web of Life Dance May 25-27. “This dance is about looking down the threads of life, both forward and backward, and seeing all the pos-
sible consequences of our choices,” says dance co-chief Mar- garita DiVita. “It’s about gaining a greater understanding of how each of us affects the strands next to us and across from us—and in fact the whole web of life.” The dancers dance in free form around an egg-shaped arbor with a sacred fire burning in the center. “The fire gives us the energy to create,” explains the dance’s other co-chief, Jeanne Robinson, adding that the dance fire burns continually, night and day. Dancers sleep in their own tents positioned around the perimeter of the arbor, which is outlined by 12 wooden poles connected by strings of prayer ties made by the dancers. A sweat lodge is held before the dance for purification, and a feast of celebration is held after the dance ends. Although the dancers and crew are all women, men help prepare the dance area on Friday afternoon and are also welcome to return on Sunday to join the feast.
The Center is located at 880 Graves-Delozier Rd., about 45 min- utes from downtown Knoxville. For more information (including times, what to bring, and how to prepare), e-mail Margarita DiVita at

U Joseph Akins
nity Transformation will present a concert featuring jazz pianist
Joseph Akins on May 19 at Yoga Haven, 12 Forest Court, Knoxville. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and will be offered on a donation basis.
A recording artist and college
professor, Akins received his Doctorate of Education in 2006 and is an award-
winning associate professor at the Department of Record- ing Industry at Middle Tennessee State University. He has released four solo albums: A Piano Christmas (2011), Spirit Touch (2009), Masterpeace (2007), and Keys to the Heart (1997). “Joseph’s albums have received extensive airplay and favorable reviews worldwide,” says Rev. Lora Beth Gilbreath of Unity Transformation. “His heartfelt playing is often com- pared to that of Jim Brickman and David Lanz, but the blend- ing of his southern roots and jazz background has created a distinct sound of his own.” Over the last decade, Akins has been touring the United States, performing in churches, homes and performance halls, and often sharing the stage with venerable piano artists such as David Lanz, Liz Story and David Nevue.
Unity Transformation, affiliated with Unity Worldwide Min- istries, hosts the Unity Online Radio broadcast “Hooked on Classics” with Rev. Lora Beth Gilbreath. It meets on Sunday mornings at Yoga Haven.
