Meet Kathy Kusner – The Ultimate Lady Legend

While only 21 years old, she set the U.S Ladies High Jump record and was named “Horsewoman of the Year” before joining the United States Equestrian Team in 1961.

She was one of the fi rst women to ride on a U.S. Equestrian Team (USET) in the Olympics, fi rst riding at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, then in the 1968 Games in Mexico City, and fi nally playing an integral part in the USET’s team Silver Medal victory in 1972 at Munich. She won a team Gold Medal at the 1963 Pan American Games in Sao Paolo and a team Silver Medal at the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. Kusner was a two-time winner of the “Leading International Rider Award” at the National Horse Show and she earned international recognition in 1967 as the Ladies European Champion.

Kathy was also the fi rst licensed female jockey in the United States (having sued the Maryland Racing Commission for the right to ride in races). She was also the fi rst licensed female jockey in Mexico, Germany, Columbia, Chile, Peru, Panama, South Africa and Rhodesia. She was also the fi rst woman to ride in the Maryland Hunt Cup, the world’s toughest timber race.

As part of her post-riding career, Kathy established the organization Horses in the Hood, which works with inner-city children in the Los Angeles area. She also consults as an expert witness and appraiser in connection with horse-related legal matters, designs Grand Prix show jumping courses, and has served as a television commentator. Kathy had a brief movie career with the horse Aberali, riding for the long shots in the Disney movie “The Horse in the Grey Flannel Suit.”

A skilled pilot and an experienced scuba diver, Kusner was also a competitive runner, winning track and fi eld events and road races.
