veryone has been affected by cancer in some way, shape, or form. Either someone we love has been diagnosed or someone we know has fought cancer and won. Maybe you are a survivor yourself. But the facts re- main: In the U.S., 1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes; however, early detection is essential to survival. Cancer Schmancer was created by Fran Dre- scher of the hit TV series, The Nanny. Drescher was diagnosed with uterine cancer and beat it. She was misdiagnosed and treated for a con- dition she didn’t have. After two years, eight doctors, countless tests and medications, her worst fears were confirmed—that she did, in fact, have cancer. In 2002, she wrote the book Cancer Schmancer to tell her story of survival and hopefully to prevent the same thing from happening to other women. Drescher started the Cancer Schmancer Movement and Cancer Schmancer Foundation to transform women from patients into medical consumers and to shift the priority from searching for a cure to- wards prevention and early detection. The main objective of Cancer Schmancer is to promote smart consumerism and to provide tools for education and prevention.
has the power to eradicate the body of the disease. Cancer is an especially devastating illness that ravages every dimension of the body. Even the treatment for cancer is violent and debilitating. Chemotherapy and radiation deplete you of everything—both good and bad cells. It takes a lot of strength to make it through this kind of treatment. This is where Break The Norms steps in.

“What we really need to do is start ques- tioning, what is the cause? And eliminating it,” says Dre- scher. “95 percent of most cancers are environmental, so if you start making healthier choices with what you clean your home with, what you put on your skin, and what you eat, you can—right away—begin to reduce your risk of cancer.” She created the Trash Cancer prevention initiative, an online guide that educates the public about the dangers of many household products.
Although conventional medical treatment for cancer is effective, it only treats one dimension of the illness. When disease occurs, it creates ‘dis-ease’ in the body … mental, emotional, physical and spiritual dis-ease. Noth- ing that happens in our body is contained in one area. Anything that happens in the body first originates in the mind, and we possess the power to heal ourselves. Stud- ies show that the power of visualization and meditation have infinite healing potential. Those who make medita- tion a part of their daily routine cultivate inner peace and boundless well-being in all areas of their lives. “I like to take an hour of every day to meditate,” Drescher says, “It’s so healing and empowering.”

Break The Norms (BTN) is a center for meditation, self-discovery, and healing. In conjunction with conventional medical treat- ment for cancer, it is essential to rehabilitate and treat your spiritual self as well. BTN aims to raise the consciousness of individuals as a method of self- healing. It works not only by educating and increasing understanding of self-healing but also by providing processes and tools for an intimate, internal experience. BTN believes it is necessary to focus not only on the physical effects of disease but also to face cancer through mental and spiritual chan- nels. Both organizations provide unique as- pects of healing. Intertwined, their destinations are the same in developing mental wellness for inner and outer healing. BTN’s online resource center will guide people through cancer heal- ing in the form of community events, articles, videos, chat forums, and user-submitted questions which address topics such as the art of breathing, sacred medita- tion, and self-healing.
The BTN-Cancer Schmancer collaboration will uncover how breaking the norms can lead to the path of true healing potential. Many diseases in life are created by our mind and negative thoughts. Treating those diseases require us to raise our thoughts to a higher awareness level. As Einstein said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” We hold within ourselves the power to restructure our health. BTN and Cancer Schmancer intend to create a comprehensive picture around healing and cancer prevention. “We have been looking for a dedicated organization working toward a good cause. When I met Fran the first time, I was hugely impressed that a woman who has gone through so much in life is all about smiles. She became my hero, and I decided to join her in this wonderful move- ment. At Break The Norms, we feel honored to join forces with Fran in this movement toward a higher cause,” says Chandresh Bhardwaj, founder of BTN.
