HISTORY Dance CouncilHonors began as the LegacyAwards in 1987when MaryMcLarry Bywaters, a founder of TheDance Council,was presented the first award. In 1997, the awardswere expanded to include the present awards and renamed Dance Council ofNorth TexasHonors in 2005.
AWARDDESCRIPTIONS MaryMcLarry BywatersAward for lifetime Contribution toDance This award is named for a founder ofDCNT. TheMary honors a mature personwho hasmade a lifetime contribution to their cho- sen field.Without strict requirements aboutwhat constitutes a lifetime contribution to dance, endeavors include:work as dancer, choreographer, company director, dance presenter, or dancewriter. Someone havingmade longtime, significant contributions to organizations that support dance, or someone having givenmajor financial support to the dance community are included. These examples are not intended to limit eligibility for theMary BywatersAward.
Natalie SkeltonAward forArtistic Excellence This award is named for a founder ofDCNT. TheNatalie honors a younger personwho is an emerging artist or someonewho is active in the danceworld and is receiving recognition for artistic excellence in her/his chosen area. The recipientmay be pursuing a career anywhere but should reside in Texas, have grown up in Texas or received significant training in the state.Whilemost of the recipients have been dancers, this awardmay recognize achievement in other artistic aspects of the dance profession.
MaryWarnerAward for Service toDance This award is named for videographer and longtimeDCNT sup- porter,MaryWarner. The award honors an individual or organi- zation for longtime service to the dance community in any of the supporting activities that are so essential to the dance enterprise. Among these are: videoing, costuming, photography, scenic or lighting design, administration, advocacy,media or fundraising. These examples are not intended to limit eligibility for theMary WarnerAward. This award recognizes compensated and/or uncompensated activities that support dance.
LarryWhiteDance EducatorAward This honor is named for themodern dancer, choreographer and inspiring SouthernMethodistUniversity professor, LarryWhite.
