Band youngsters shine at NPC contest M
EMBERS of the NyPBoS were among the prizes at The National Piping Centre Junior Solo Contest in February. The event attracted a large field of entrants, per- forming to a high standard.

NYPBoS drum corps GRANT Cassidy has been appointed as the new Drum Sergeant of The National youth Pipe Band of Scotland. He takes over the lead- ing drummer’s role from Steven Shedden who has decided to step down after three years due to increased commitments elsewhere.

Grant comes into the position with a wealth of experience and knowledge and is keen to further develop the drum corps for the future. The band’s senior drum corps currently comprises 13 snare drummers, seven tenors and a bass.

lCRAIG Muirhead and Keith Bowes will bat- tle it out in the final of the Scots Guards Club knock-out competition on Sunday, May 6. This is a change of date from what was published in the previous issue of Piping Today. Craig secured his place by beating Jenny Hazzard
while Keith saw off the challenge of Glenn Brown. The final is at the Scots Guards Club, Haymarket, Edinburgh, commencing at 4pm with curry served after the event. Tickets £10. The sad loss of Robert Stewart and the retiral of
Agnes Liddell resulted in the appointment of Jimmy Beaton as Piping Convener and Eilidh and Emma Carmichael as Joint Secretaries. Jimmy was brought up in Inveraray and learned his piping from pipe major Ronnie MacCallum and Robert Stewart. He works at The National Piping Centre where he runs an oral history project called ‘Noting the Tradition’.

date for entries is June 15. l THE Competing Pipers’ Association plan to honour the memory of Jimmie McGregor by running an annual educational seminar with the first one getting under way in May. The topic will be piobaireachd – and the focus will be on how judges perform their important and difficult task – sorting out the most musical performance at a competition. John Wilson and Jack Taylor will lead the session. A selection of players will play tunes and there will be an open discussion on the topic.
The venue is the Scots Guards Club, Haymarket, Edinburgh, on Sunday, May 6 from 1 - 5 pm. The event will be recorded and made available to all CPA members on the internet. lLUSS Highland Games are introducing a new Piobaireachd competition.
