THE National Piping Centre’s summer school in Virginia is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Pipers and drummers will descend on Shenandoah
University, Winchester, Virginia, between June 17 and 22 for a packed programme of tuition and workshops. The event boasts world-class piping instructors including the current and four-time Glenfiddich Champion (and NPC principal) Roddy MacLeod MBE, Cpt (Retd) Stuart Samson MBE, ex-director of the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drum- ming, 2011 Gold Medallist and three-time World Pipe Band Championship winner Callum Beaumont
and 2009 Gold Medallist and twice World Pipe Band Championship winner Glenn Brown. Drummers will also experience fantastic teaching with Graham Brown (snare), the current leading drummer of Peel Regional Police, and Steven Kilbride (tenor), who has vast experience in pipe bands and teaching. THE annual Duncan Johnstone Memorial Competition was held at The National Piping Centre in Glasgow on March 17. Northern Meeting opens up junior events
THE prestigious Junior Solo Piping Competitions at the Northern Meeting will be open to all young pipers this year for the first time. Previously the competitions had been restricted to players from the Highland counties of Scotland but organisers have decided to give the junior events a similar standing to the senior competitions by making them open to all.
There will be Piobaireachd and March, Strathspey and Reel competitions for two age groups –
under-15 and under-18. These contests will be held at Eden Court Theatre in Inverness on Saturday, September 8.
Applications should be made before June 30 on the form available on the Northern Meeting web- site at
piping.northern-meeting.org (click on Junior Competition).
