COLLEGE CELEBRATES FRIENDLY VICTORY OVER WEST HAM ACADEMY USA

THE Havering College Romford Academy football squad are celebrating victory after pitching themselves against West Ham International Academy North America.

The ‘friendly’ match at West Ham Academy’s Little Heath Training Ground in Hainault, Essex, on Saturday March 10, resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Havering College students.

Their course - a Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Sport qualification – is run in conjunction with Romford Football Club. It allows soccer-mad teenagers, who dream of making the grade as professional footballers, the opportunity to pursue their sporting ambitions while still studying for the equivalent of two A-levels.

As the Romford FC Academy, they play in the Football Conference Youth Alliance (South B Division) and are currently fourth in the division.

Havering College Sports lecturer Mick Shea said: “Saturday’s friendly against young players from North America was arranged by Mark Phillips who works as a football coach for both West Ham Academy and Romford Academy FC.”

The goal scorer was Havering College student Sam Williams, 18, from Stratford.

Mr Shea: “It was a close game with both teams creating chances in the opening stages. It was fast paced with both sides trying to build from the back. Romford were closing down high up the pitch to try and force mistakes by West Ham defenders and were starting to create some chances. It was a close first half with both sides missing good chances to take the lead and the half ended at 0-0.

“The second half continued in much the same fashion with both teams creating chances and not taking them. Then a long clearance from Russell Harley caught out the West Ham central defender who tried to head backwards to his keeper. Sam Williams read the situation and got onto the back pass and with the keeper staying on his line Williams got there ahead of the defenders and slotted into the bottom corner to make it 1-0. More chances were created and more chances were missed with the game continuing and ending at 1-0.”
