Niche business keeps IAM ahead

Ireland is doing “a fantastic job” to export its way out of recession and now has the highest trade surplus in the EU relative to its GDP, according to Ian McCool, MD of leading Irish GSA International Airline Marketing (IAM). Air exports, which plunged

by 21% in 2009, have nudged back upwards since with 2% growth in 2010 and 3% last year. IAM’s volumes grew significantly ahead of the market at 13%, boosted by strong niche business such as bloodstock. “We shipped over 300 horses to a number of destinations,” McCool says. Temperature-controlled

shipments have also been a significant growth area, with products from both American Airlines (AA) and Air Canada (AC) well received in the Irish market. Both carriers operate seasonal widebody services, with AC set to return in June on the Dublin-Toronto route while AA resumes a daily B767-300 service to Chicago from April. AA’s parent company, AMR Corporation, filed for Chapter

11 bankruptcy protection in November and could spend 12 to 18 months achieving the necessary cost reductions. Creditors are believed

favour an ultimate merger with US Airways. McCool says longhaul services

to are thus

far unaffected and believes AA will cull mostly domestic routes served by smaller, older aircraft. With

“vast amounts of

overcapacity” and more to come, IAM sees a hard slog ahead on rates. Surcharges can be four times the base rate, and all-in rates below the surcharge level in some markets The Middle East and south-

east Asia could become a “bloodbath” as Emirates, Etihad and Malaysia Airlines fight for market share, McCool predicts. A relatively recent client airline, AirAsia X, has been forced by high taxes and increasing fuel prices to pull its A340 services out of Europe. “We’re working hard to agree interline feed to keep hold of our strong market share to the Australian market,” McCool says.

Johnston goes European

Dublin-based Johnston Logistics says that it is unique in having made the transition from being a traditional domestic haulier to a true pan-European logistics provider, while retaining the quality and service levels of a local organisation. A focused expansion into mainland Europe has been spearheaded by an exclusive partnership with the Dachser European-wide network. Johnston Logistics operates

from seven sites in Ireland, with a headquarters in Dublin. The company specialises in contract logistics, European logistics and domestic distribution. It operates

from a modern

high-bay warehouse facility, with ambient and temperature controlled areas with temperature monitoring alarm systems. A comprehensive warehouse management system

gives real time stock visibility and transparent tracking and traceability. All warehouse transactions

are through real time bar code scanning under digital CCTV, allowing clear order pick visibility. The company also has

considerable expertise in dealing with hazardous goods and has a full time manager. It is ISO 9001:2000 and SQAS accredited. A nationwide distribution

network offers same day and next day deliveries and the entire domestic network is ADR compliant. Among ‘green’ initiatives are

rain water harvesting, which supplies water to an automatic truck wash which in turn recycles 95% of its water. The Johnston Logistics fleet includes ‘teardrop’ with enhanced load capability.

Shipco Transport, a US- headquartered NVOCC established in 1988, has opened its own office in Ireland and is setting out its stall as the only truly neutral service provider in the market. The company previously operated

through an agent, but felt the time was right to buck the industry trend and offer direct Irish services in its own right. The company has taken space

in a purpose-built office complex in Swords, north of Dublin. General manager Billy Mulligan

heads a team of just three initially and claims even the largest forwarders are happy to outsource to genuinely neutral NVOCCs. “We are pure wholesalers and won’t go chasing importers or exporters directly. Forwarders look for this aspect before committing their full
