Food specialist Yearsley moves into forwarding


Manchester-based frozen food sales, storage and distribution specialist Yearsley Group has launched a new global logistics and freight forwarding division. The group will take control of the logistics and import operations for products imported from overseas by UK food manufacturing customers, making full use of Yearsley Group’s logistics network. Service will be available on


all trade lanes although existing customers are particularly strong from the Far East and Indian sub-continent. The new division will be based at Yearsley Group’s Heywood headquarters. Yearsley will extend its current


domestic port-side collection and deliveries into UK manufacturers services to include overseas road haulage,


international freight


transport, by sea or air, and customs requirements. It also plans to develop partnerships with overseas logistics operators and will invest in a fleet of skeletal container trailers units. The move will help UK


manufacturers to reduce the number of operators and intermediaries they encounter throughout the product’s journey, and realise time and cost efficiencies, says Yearsley. Shipments will be handled by one team, throughout the journey. Yearsley will offer manufacturers


a contract covering any aspect of the product journey, such as collection from the overseas supplier, plus international transfer, or simply collection from the UK port and road delivery into the Yearsley cold store. Yearsley will

Virgin Atlantic Cargo is to reintroduce flights to Mumbai from 28 October. A daily Airbus A330 passenger and cargo service will operate from London Heathrow, a route the carrier served from 2005 to 2009. Virgin’s director of cargo, John Lloyd, said: “We expect to easily fill our capacity with cargo connecting to and from points across the Virgin network.”


DHL is launching an extra round-the-world 777 freighter flight between Hong Kong, Los Angeles and Leipzig It says it will create a unique service proposition between Asia and Western US and Canada, with many Chinese cities gaining a next-day connection into North America.


Jade Cargo, the Luſthansa Cargo-Shenzhen Airlines joint venture said on 29 February that it had signed a letter of intent with Shenzhen- based logistics company UniTop to rescue the troubled carrier. Jade Cargo said on 31 December that it had “temporarily suspended” its operations while it agreed on a restructuring plan.

Hellmann UK signs Portugal deal


Hellmann Worldwide Logistics UK has signed a new partnership with Rangel Express and Logistics in Portugal to operate round trip road freight services to Oporto and Lisbon. Existing twice-weekly from the UK to Portugal will increase from twice to three direct departures a week. Hellmann UK’s commercial


director, Matthew Marriott, said: “Finding the right partner is absolutely crucial to this endeavour and we believe that working with Rangel Express and Logistics is a really positive move for both companies.” The move follows deals between


Hellmann UK and Itella Logistics in Scandinavia, Deutsche Transport Compagnie (DTC) in Nuremberg, and a new hub solution to service the Baltic and Russian CIS markets. Hellmann

Far East lines sign deals


Cosco, “K” Line, Yang Ming, Hanjin and Evergreen have published further details of the new joint service announced in December last year (see FBJ 01 2012, page 2). The lines will sign individual cooperative arrangements on the Asia-Europe trades from April 2012 with eight weekly services between North Europe and Asia and four


between the Mediterranean and Asia. Highlights include transit times


from Asia to major European ports of as little as 26-27 days from Shanghai/Ningbo and 23-24 days from Yantian. Most services will be operated


by ships of between 8,000TEU and 13,000teu.

G6 brings launch forward


The new G6 Alliance is to bring forward the launch of its combined Asia-Europe/Mediterranean service by a month to the first week of March. The G6 Alliance, serving

Overseas Container Line - will launch six services between Asia and North Europe. Routes serving Japanese ports will commence aſter completion of consultations with the Japan Harbor Transportation Association and labour unions. A seventh service providing


direct coverage to the Bohai Bay ports in Dalian and Xingang will follow “when it can be supported by sustainable trade conditions”, the lines added.


Emirates is to upgrade its daily flight from Newcastle to Dubai from a Airbus A330-200 to a Boeing 777-300ER from 1 September. It will raise cargo capacity by 22% to over 16 tonnes per flight. Popular commodities shipped from the North-East include oil rig equipment, car parts, personal effects and pharmaceuticals.


The Dubai Police Aviation Security Department announced a new initiative to improve air cargo security on 5 March, according to Zawya Daily. Under the ‘Appointed Forwarder’ scheme, only approved companies that take all security measures to protect their cargo will be able to send and receive air freight directly. Other companies will have to go through one of the approved companies.


Qatar Airways is expanding its dedicated freighter services with four new routes from Doha to Karachi, Seoul, Johannesburg and Muscat from 26 March. At the same time, it is adding a fiſth daily passenger flight between London Heathrow and its Doha hub.


EU foreign ministers agreed on 27 February impose further sanctions on Syria, including a ban on all-cargo flights operated by its carriers, along with trade in precious metals and diamonds. The sanctions are aimed at putting pressure on President Bashar al-Assad’s regime which has reportedly killed over 7,000 people in the current unrest.


Singapore Airlines Cargo says it has reduced its freighter capacity by 20% due to continued weak demand and high fuel prices. The carrier added that it was not optimistic about the near-term outlook. SIA Cargo, which currently operates 13 Boeing 747-400 freighters, has reduced flying hours of its aircraſt.


China Southern Airlines is to launch Airbus A330-200 passenger flights from London Heathrow to Guangzhou Baiyun in June 2012. The carrier already flies to several continental gateways but has been prevented from flying to Heathrow because of capacity restrictions.


Luſthansa Cargo is offering a new express service for very urgent shipments. Courier.Solutions promises the fastest transit and shortest delivery times in the Luſthansa Cargo portfolio plus constant surveillance and custody of consignments and for extremely time- critical and sensitive cargo. There are no weight limits and entire pallets or containers can be transported. The new product is offered in close cooperation with time:matters, a Luſthansa Cargo Group company that specialises in Special Speed Logistics services. Customers can drop off their shipment as little as one hour before departure and transfer times at Frankfurt are as little as one hour. Meanwhile, time:matters, has opened its tenth UK station at Aberdeen airport. It serves the North Sea oil and gas industry, along with ship spares and the maritime industries with several daily direct flights to Luſthansa’s main hub at Frankfurt.
