Bristol is the cultural centre of the West of England and arguably the best place to live in the UK. In fact a OnePoll survey, released in 2009, revealed Bristol as the best place to live in England. It followed a survey of 5,000 people which looked at a range of factors, including quality of life, friendliness and pay.
STUDENT LIFE IN BRISTOL
Bristol has two main universities, both with strong reputations and world class facilities. Much of Bristol maintains a very ‘student friendly’ feel. Park Street is a thriving centre of student bars, clubs and alternative shops and markets. The port also features a number of venues which are student friendly.

The University of Bristol has over 18,000 students of which around 5,000 of them are postgraduate. The number of people applying to study in the university significantly outnumbers the places available and therefore the university is in a good position to demand high entry requirements.

The University of Bristol received its Royal Charter in 1909 and is based in the attractive Clifton area of the city. The university has quite a number of distinctive red brick buildings (and its regarded as a ‘red brick’ university). The university is well respected for its contribution to research and it is a member of the Russell Group of research universities.

The University of the West of England received its Royal Charter in 1992 and was therefore able to classify itself as a university from its pervious polytechnic status (Bristol Polytechnic). However, UWE’s origins’ date back to 1598 (when it was known as the Merchant Venturers’ Navigation School). The University of West of England has nearly 30,000 students making it the larger of the two universities in Bristol.
Social Life
Bristol has a vibrant and varied nightlife. The harbourside is lined with bars to suit all tastes and Park Street features many unique bars and clubs. Bristol has a reputation for being one of the main UK rave cities. If you enjoy a packed non-stop nightlife then Bristol won’t disappoint.
