Q: Which area of journalism are you most keen on moving into?

I am keen to move into broadcast journalism focusing on public affairs and politics. I feel more people should be engaged in discussions and debates that affect their everyday lives.

Q: What has been your best experience so far during your MA?

My best experience has been from meeting some of the people within the industry to learn how to get a foot in the door of journalism and listening to their tips and advice. We have had Adam Boulton (Sky Political Editor) come to

visit recently and his insights and expertise were invaluable.

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I would like to be in some sort of current affairs role. I am big a fan of Jeremy Vine’s mid morning show on BBC Radio 2 and the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 where you have the opportunity to take current affairs and flesh them out a bit with critical analysis to get the heart of what is going on in the world around us.

Q: Whom do you look up to most in the world of journalism?

I am a big admirer of seasoned journalists such as people like John Simpson who have been around the world and have reported on some of the biggest issues facing us at the moment. His experiences of witnessing major events such as the fall of the Berlin wall are awe-inspiring and what a privileged job he has had at being at such momentous events.

Q: What do you think will be your biggest challenge in landing your first job in journalism or are you going to continue on a freelance basis?

I think my biggest challenge will be to get a permanent post. I feel confident that through my academic skills and freelance work that I will able to show an employer that I have industry experience and have not just relied on my MA. I feel that you need to put the theory into practice to show an employer that you are genuinely enthusiastic and committed to a career in journalism. I am hoping that this will put me on a firmer footing than some of my peers.
