THE

UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER MANCHESTER BUSINESS ‘My year abroad was the best

experience of my life.’

Kieran Doyle graduated in BSc (Hons) International Management with American Business Studies in 2009 and is now an online media associate at Google in Dublin.

Why did you choose to study your chosen course?

I chose the course for three reasons. Firstly, I was attracted to IMABS because it offered a wide range of modules. After the first year, you can begin to specialise or continue studying different aspects. This flexibility was definitely attractive. Spending a full year abroad was a huge draw. The prospect of studying in North America made the course my first choice - I knew it would stand out on my CV. MBS has links with some of the most highly regarded business schools in the world and many of these were available as an exchange.

Lastly, MBS’ reputation was a reassuring factor. I had been impressed by the open day and had friends studying there who

recommended the School.

What did you enjoy most about your time at MBS?

My year abroad was the best experience of my life. I studied at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver and would encourage anyone who has the opportunity to take part in an exchange to do it.

Being immersed in a different culture benefitted me both personally and academically. I went skiing every weekend in Whistler, had a stunning view of the city, sea and mountains from my halls and travelled across North America. At the same time I was learning about business from a North American perspective which involved a more hands on, practical approach. It was my time at UBC which sparked my interest in online marketing, which I continued into my final year. I made some great contacts who I still keep in touch with.

Did you have a clear future career path in mind?

Absolutely not. Business is a useful degree to have because there are so many aspects to it. Following on from taking some marketing units in my second year, I took an e-marketing unit at UBC which introduced me to online business models. I took part in a global student competition called the ‘Google Online Marketing Challenge’ which was a great experience and helped me to get my job at Google two years later.

What job/s have you gone into since graduating?

Google is my first ‘real’ job. I’m on the online media associate program which is a career development program designed with new graduates in mind. In 18 months I’ve had experience in consulting,

sales and working on global projects. It has pretty much cemented my thinking that I’ll be working in technology and being a geek for a while to come!

What are your future aspirations?

Right now I can only see myself working in online business; it’s already a huge industry and it’s only going to get bigger. I enjoy working with new technology and mobile is the area everyone’s talking about so that’s one route I would like to explore.

Looking further down the line, it’s difficult to say what the online landscape will look like five years from now. Two years ago, I was about to go travelling for six months and was considering setting up my own business when I returned. Everything changed within the space of a few weeks which taught me to keep my options open and not to pass up a good opportunity.
