STUDY
ABROAD – BRAZIL
By QS Network
As if they’re not already, all eyes will be on Brazil in the next decade. In 2014, Brazil will host the FIFA World Cup and in 2016 Rio de Janeiro will host the Olympic Games. But Brazil is more than just sports tournaments, partying and carnivals. It’s also one of the fastest emerging nations in the world and as such is offering many an opportunity to undergraduate students studying abroad.
Country Overview
Coined a BRIC nation, along with Russia, India, and China, Brazil is
fast becoming one of the world’s economic powerhouses. A developing nation and one to watch over the coming decade, Brazil boasts the eighth largest economy in the world and is only set to increase.
A Portuguese colony, Brazil – officially the Federative Republic of Brazil – is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest country in the world. With a population of over 190 million people, Brazil is a country of diversity, variety, and tradition. It borders 17 of the 19 South American countries (the two exceptions are Ecuador and Chile), and its official language is Portuguese.
Brazil has much to offer the international student studying abroad – from experiences within cities to the opportunity to explore some of the world’s most picturesque of natural environments. Brazil’s capital city Brasilia, may be the least famous of them all – though it does have to compete for the limelight against the carnival atmosphere of Rio De Janeiro, not to mention Sao Paulo, - not only Brazil’s largest city,
but the largest city in the southern hemisphere. Then there are the beaches of Salvador, the Amazon river and rainforest, the UNESCO World Heritage Iguaçu National Park, and the historic centre of São Luís.
Food-wise, Brazil’s restaurant menus may not be as well known as Mexico’s array of tortillas and burritos, but you won’t go hungry studying abroad in this part of South America. Brazilian cuisine is distinctive across each region, but consists mainly of dishes made up of rice, black beans, root vegetables, fish, beef, and pork. There’s plenty of fresh fruit to be eaten as well, including the exotic mango and papaya, and don’t forget Caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail!
The world’s fifth largest country, Brazil has something to offer any undergraduate student considering studying abroad. It’s a country on the cusp of world power, a country of environmental beauty and a country you will only ever be able to appreciate by visiting and experiencing all it has to offer.
