A new powerhouse in mid-market IT and managed hosting

Get ready for the name of Pulsant to start reverberating in the mid- market boardrooms of the Thames Valley and far beyond, says John Burbedge

The launch of Pulsant was announced last month following the integration of three established and successful IT service companies – Lumison, DediPower and BlueSquare Data.

The merger immediately created a powerhouse operator in the IT, cloud, colocation and managed hosting sector, with capabilities and resources that already make it a mid-market leader in some areas.

Pulsant begins life as a £30 million turnover company with a nationwide network of eight enterprise-class UK data centres, operational locations in New York, Amsterdam and Hong Kong and over 3,000 customers to whom it provides 24/7 support. The name may be new but Pulsant’s credentials are tried and tested.

Which is how it should be, says sales and marketing director Rob Davies, because Pulsant’s proven expertise underpins the everyday IT functions and working lives of many mid-market, national and international businesses.

“The focus of all three IT service providers now combined in Pulsant has always been on providing personal, consistent and professional service to our customers. That has been assured by achieving a corporate scale that will enable us to satisfy the requirements of most mid-market companies, while allowing us to truly deliver a full portfolio of services and develop even more innovative and highly configurable IT and hosting solutions. all concerned.

It’s a win:win situation for

“We are well and truly in the Digital Age and the amount of data that is driven electronically and needs management, transfer and hosting is now in full flow and that shows no sign of stopping,“ said Davies.

“We recognised that the current service providers that help mid-market customers deal with their data requirements were quite small and fragmented. We saw the opportunity to build a new type of provider with suitable scale and a rich set of complementary services to add customer value – the sum of our parts being greater than the individual.

capital funding, can invest, scale its operations and meet customers’ entire IT and data centre needs.“

The three-piece jigsaw of Pulsant brings together Lumison’s strength in network management, colocation and managed services, BlueSqaure Data with its “fantastic colocation model that took the market by storm“, and DediPower with its prowess in managed hosting and cloud.

“Our common denominators are a proven international network and data centres in the UK, Amsterdam, New York and Hong Kong. That scale and footprint is quite unique and allows us to offer wide-ranging services.“ Pulsant is now the seventh largest data centre provider in the UK and one of the largest mid- market providers, Davies says.

“We can now concentrate on our customer’s full agenda and as a ’one-stop shop’ deliver the solutions that will help them achieve their business objectives.“

Davies believes that Pulsant is now broadly aligned to mid-market companies with 50 – 1,000 IT users, although there will be sector variations.

Pulsant’s management team includes well- known names in the IT and managed hosting sector: CEO Mark Howling, CFO Graeme McKenzie, COO Dr Kurt Elli, CTO Matt Lovell and Rob Davies himself.

Bridgepoint Development Capital, which has a strong record of assisting corporate growth, has backed Pulsant’s creation.

Pulsant made no merger redundancies, has been recruiting through organic sales growth since integration procedures began last October, and already has a £6m investment plan for this year. While enrichment of existing Pulsant-branded services is its current priority, there will be a forward-looking focus on “the technical building blocks to deliver flexible and scalable cloud services“.

Does that mean ’cloud’ is the future? “Cloud is evolution not a revolution. It’s just part of an industry that is exponentially growing and evolving, and our job is to provide our customers with IT that supports the business model that works for them.“

So, development of data centre capability, “green“ renewable resources, cold aisle containment, cloud platforms, additional best practice operations are likely – but the company will always be led by the requirements of its customers.

Pulsant sponsors new award

Pulsant is sponsoring a new Best Use of Technology category within this year’s Thames Valley Business Magazine Awards.

“We are an organisation that has grown as a result of innovation in IT and therefore our support for this award is particularly close to our heart. Using technology in innovative ways brings positive results for businesses, and ultimately the UK economy, and we will be very proud to make our award to the winner,“ said Pulsant sales and marketing director Rob Davies.

Judges will be looking for innovators and problem-solvers that have produced or implemented ground-breaking software, solutions, systems, hardware or processes. How the technology has been used to increase efficiency, drive sales, open up new markets or improve life will also be key factors.

The new Pulsant award is open to all sizes of Thames Valley organisations – from start-ups to established businesses – operating in IT, telecoms and science- based technology.
