he Spreckels Society held their annual gala on Saturday, August 21, at the beautiful home of Bill and Joanie Huck. Adopting the theme of “An Evening in Provence,” the home, guest cottage and garden provided the ambience of a French country villa with suitable flowers and table settings. Doug St. Denis presented an award to Wes and Charlotte Harris for all the support they have given to the Coronado Historical Association over the years. Spreckels Society members receive many benefits including a historic photo from our Museum Store collection, a complimentary copy of a CHA-produced historical film on DVD, two tickets to the annual Spreckels Society Gala, invitations to the “Patriotic Breakfast” and parade viewing on the Fourth of July and the Holiday Party and Christmas Parade viewing in December and eight complimentary tickets for the Heritage Walk tour. Spreckels business members are also listed on the CHA website, in the Annual Report and in the newsletter, History Matters. For more information, please call the CHA Office, 619-435-7242.

Here’s a challenge to all you history buffs. In the special newspaper, find all the street addresses* in an article entitled “Orange Avenue Business is Booming,” and tell us what is located there today. The first 25 people to send us the correct answers will receive a free copy of the custom 2011 CHA calendar, which we will be selling in the Museum Store.
*Note: we are looking for businesses with street addresses only, not ones listed “at” or “near” an intersection in the article.
