HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE P

By Christie Simeral, Intern

lease join fellow friends of CHA on Thursday, November 18, from 5-7 p.m., for our Annual Store Holiday Open

House. This event provides you with a wonderful opportunity to purchase your holiday gifts from CHA for everyone on your list! Don’t pass up this chance, not only to support CHA, but also to give the truly unique and beautiful gifts our Store has to offer.

This year we are featuring three new Holiday ornaments, each a style of its own. Perhaps the most unique is a musical

gift bag which features a color depiction of the Hotel Del and plays two songs, “Deck the Halls” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas!” A more traditional ornament is our red glass ball which features the Hotel Del in front and Coronado Historical Association on the back, and comes boxed and ready to give! Also available is a beautiful round disc on ribbon ornament featuring a color depiction of the Hotel Del.

Local artist Nan Sandhaus’ new “Coronado Dreamer” line will also be available. Her work has been a huge hit at the Store and includes a variety of beautiful, unique jewelry along with ornaments, bookmarks and even hats that feature various images and symbols of Coronado. To complement our Bicycles and Bloomers exhibit, we have created ladies-style tee-shirts featuring wonderful reproductions from the Pryor Dodge Bicycle Collection. In addition, many mugs and greeting cards are for sale, featuring a very popular “Women Who Love Bicycles” image, made exclusively for CHA! For a “Sweet Taste of Coronado,” we invite you to enjoy light refreshments of various baked goods provided by the finest restaurants in Coronado. You will also receive a free gift with your purchase of $20 or more, along with complimentary gift-wrapping of your Store purchases. This is also a great opportunity to take advantage of your membership discount as you cross names off your list. Thank you for supporting CHA!

Two-Day Coronado Art Walk Big Success

(photo courtesty of Bob Gardner) T

he fifth annual Coronado Art Walk presented by the CHA, was held on September 18 and 19, bringing thousands of visitors to Coronado. Ninety-three artists presented their creations for sale, and nine different art activities offered opportunities for all ages to try their hand at various artistic skills, ranging from weaving to painting to knitting. Lively entertainment occurred throughout and an authentic English double-decker bus shuttled people around town with stops along the way to take in Coronado’s sights.

Many volunteers gave out information

This was our very first two-day Coronado Art Walk, and of course required far more volunteers to make the whole show run smoothly. Comments have been pouring in from all the artists praising the work of our volunteers, saying that no other show offers such support. Thank you to Courtenay McGowen, who chaired the event and worked tirelessly to make it all happen, and to the many other volunteers for a job well done. And a very special thanks to our sponsors, without whom the Coronado Art Walk would not be possible!

Visitor Center on FACEBOOK T

(Continued on page 6)

he Coronado Visitor Center is on Facebook! Our fans are now able to express their enthusiasm and provide recommendations directly to the Visitor Center and to each other. Facebook’s model of rapid communication is ideal for directing comments, photo-sharing and information links to enhance the experience of the traveler, whether first-time visitors or long-time Coronado lovers. Facebook’s exponential growth has made it the preferred medium for organizations to promote themselves, expand their audiences and provide an immediate connection to their fans. Now you can add your voice to the Coronado conversation. Visit our website and click on the Facebook icon to become a fan. And our fans are growing! This summer, daily visitation at the Coronado Visitor Center and the Museum of History and Art increased 30% over last summer. We kicked off the season by adding a second Heritage Walk (walking tour) of Coronado’s historic core to our schedule; consequently our attendance on those tours rose 179% over last summer. Heritage Walk docents offer tours Wednesday afternoons and Friday mornings.

Serving as a docent by leading our Heritage Walk or Hotel del Coronado Tour is a rewarding opportunity for those who like to teach and entertain. Docents provide an historical view of early Coronado life and its renowned local characters. Volunteers are trained to lead the popular 75 minute tours, offered every day except Mondays and Thursdays. You can also contribute your knowledge and love of Coronado by serving as a volunteer at the Coronado Visitor Center. If you enjoy meeting people from around the world, sharing your knowledge and providing some insider tips of Coronado, you’re a perfect candidate for helping out at the Visitor Center. Visitor Center volunteers work four hour shifts, and are asked to commit to two shifts each month. Volunteers also receive occasional invitations to special events and attractions in San Diego. Join the lively group of docents and Visitor Center guides! We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. For further information, contact Katherine Matlack, Visitor Center Manager, at 619.437.8788, or at vcmgr@coronadovisitorcenter.com.
