oronado is often referred to as the birthplace of naval aviation and many current and former residents have worn the “Wings of Gold.” A new exhibit at the Coronado Museum of History & Art, marking the 100th

C anniversary of U.S. Naval Aviation and emphasizing Coronado’s

role in that remarkable history, opens to the public February 4, 2011; members will be invited to a private unveiling the evening before, on February 3. Our relationship with North Island and those who have flown to or from the Naval Air Station will be illustrated through both the exhibit and accompanying public programs. The exhibit will include photographs, documents, historic artifacts and oral history interviews from CHA’s archives. Educational programs including lectures, classes and films will complement the exhibit. We are fortunate to have Mark Aldrich, author of The History of North Island: 1911-1941, as our guest curator and many others who have offered their expertise and advice.

The volunteers and staff on the naval aviation exhibit committee, are also planning a program to help educate the community about the many naval aviators who have resided in Coronado. Front-yard signs designating a home where a naval aviator once lived (or currently lives) will be installed around the community. Do you live in a home where one of these aviators lived, or do you know of someone who should be recognized? Please let us know by contacting Rob Crenshaw at wcren@sbcglobal.net.

In preparing for this exhibit, our staff is still seeking photographs, personal accounts, documents and objects that will help us tell the story of life for aviators in Coronado. Please contact either our Archivist, 619.435.7242, archivist@coronadohistory.org or Susan Keith, 619-435-4524, skeith1@san.rr.com to discuss your loan.
