Sports awards for town’s youth
MORE than 400 people packed into Maidstone Leisure Centre for the 21st Youth Sport Achievement Awards. The awards, organised by Maidstone Council’s community de- velopment team, recognise a wide range of sports including adap- tive rowing, athletics, boxing, cricket, football, gymnastics, korfball, powerboat racing and squash. The awards evening included visual displays by two local clubs
– Cascade Dance andWestree Boxing. Guest speaker was Hugh Robertson MP, Minister for Sport and
the Olympics, who opened the awards by saying: “For any young person growing up and getting involved in sport, this is going to be a fantastic decade. “These awards encourage the next generation of young children growing up in and around Maidstone. It gives them recognition and encourages people to get involved with them.” There are 11 categories for the awards and five training grants,

Open your doors
for heritage days RESIDENTS with places of his- torical interest – such as a wind- mill, working oast – or a collection of vintage cars, are being asked to open their doors for this year’s heritage open days. Maidstone Council wants peo-
