Headcorn traveller given ‘more commitment’

A GYPSY site in Headcorn was given a lengthier permission after a request from amember of Maid- stone Council’s planning com- mittee. A resident of Acers Place in Lenham Road, Headcorn, applied for permanent consent following the expiration of temporary per- mission for onemobilehome and one touring caravan, which was granted in 2007. Officers recommended renew-

ing the permission for another three years, by which time Maid-

stone Council should have its new planning guidelines allocat- ing gypsy provision. But applicant Mr Cash said:

“The place we have needs more money spent on it tomake it look nice.We want full consent so we can put in full screening and bet- ter heating. “Iam51 years of age and I don’t

need the council to keep telling me I am going to get a different site. It has been going on year-in, year-out.” Cllr Tony Harwood agreed that

Cannabis haul duo in court TWO men arrested when police swooped on a cannabis farm near Laddingford have appeared in court. Yusuf Ahmed (32) and Alan O’Neill (38), both from South East London, were found to be operating one of the biggest cannabis fac- tories ever found in Kent when police raided Rhoden Farm in Lucks Lane last March. Police found awarehouse filled with ‘skunk’ cannabis plants, es- timated at yielding drugs worth around £650,000 at street level. The pair denied being involved in drug production when they appeared before Maidstone Crown Court but were found guilty. They will be sentenced on March 16.

Mobile home wanted for security

ARETROSPECTIVE application seeks to station a mobile home at Highgrove Garden Centre in Staplehurst Road, Staplehurst. The planning statement said:

“Thismobile home provides on- site accommodation for workers who ensure that all plants and produce are properly main- tained throughout the year.

“It also provides an on-site se-

curity presence to help avoid thefts and break-ins which have previously occurred at the site.” The application also requests

the formation and surfacing of delivery and service access route; display, storage and de- livery areas and provision of horticultural silo bins.

Mr Cash needed to be shown more commitment by the council to make improvements. He said: “The point the applicant makes about investment in the site in terms of landscaping strikes me as a good one. With only a three- year permission itdoes seem a lit- tle unfair to require that sort of investment, which we would not

want on other applications with temporary use. “I am convinced we are not

going to get the new policy in place in three years’ time, so maybe we should change it to a five-year permission.” This was accepted by the ma-

jority of the committee, with 11 votes for and two abstentions.

Mayor launches

village hotspot THE Mayor of Maidstone Cllr Brian Mortimer was among dozens of people who joined the celebrations to mark the of- ficial launch of Lilypie Paints etc in Chart Sutton. The Mayor cut the ceremonial ribbon and wished local busi- nesswoman Carol Filby (pic- tured) well with her unique café and home interiors store.

The Georgian building, formerly the Buffalo’s Head public house, has been completely refurbished to house French in- spired furniture pieces and specialist paint and wall coverings. Chef Nikki Sandberg ensured guests enjoyed samples from

the new café menu – along with a glass or two of bubbly. The former beer garden now houses an outdoor living dis-

play, courtesy of local joinery company Plane & Simple, and the company offers a range of workshops for anyone wanting to try their hand at sewing, haberdashery and furniture painting to get that ‘shabby chic’ look. Said Carol: “We want to offer a community ‘hot spot’ for morning coffee and light lunches, where people can pop in for a chat and to browse our eclectic range of products.” Lilypie Paints etc is open Tuesday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm, and from 10am to 4pm on Saturdays.
