he Mediterranean is the most diverse cruise region in the world, offering a wealth of cultures, languages, history and sights in a relatively small area.

Stretching from the Strait of Gibraltar and encompassing the coast of Northern Africa all the way east to Turkey and Cyprus, the Med has long been the Brits’ favourite cruise region. The cruise season starts in earnest around late

March and early April and stretches as late as October, especially for Eastern Med cruises.

The beauty of taking cruises at the start or the end of the season is that you don’t have the intense summer heat and you get to see the Med without the crowds in high season. Saga offers a number of cruises including Mediterranean Secrets aboard Saga Ruby in May and Heart of the Mediterranean aboard Saga Sapphire in October, both of which are all-inclusive. Both start and end in Southampton and take in a

number of iconic destinations including Athens, Rome and Valletta.

The 25-night Mediterranean Secrets cruise includes two stops in Turkey – Kusadasi, just 10 miles from the breathtaking ruined city of Ephesus, and Marmaris, famous for a number of ancient sites including medieval walls, a Roman fountain and a theatre dating back to the 2nd century BC.

The cruise also takes in Patmos, in Greece, a UNESCO World Heritage site; and the Palace of Knossos in Crete. Other highlights include the beautiful city of Santiago de Compostela, in north west Spain, Lisbon and Palma, Majorca.

The 22-night Heart of the Mediterranean cruise

aboard Saga Sapphire sets sail on October 11 from Southampton, also calling at Santiago de Compostela, and then onto one of Spain’s most beautiful port cities, Cadiz, awash with culture and history.

The cruise also includes stops in Piraeus (for Athens), Heraklion in Crete and Valencia and Cartagena, Spain.
