CCTV surveillance technology and best practice takes centre stage

With Internet Protocol (IP) surveillance proving increasingly popular across the globe and an evident increase in the innovative use of CCTV, how can the transport industry keep abreast of the latest legislation, best practice, new products and solutions to ensure its infrastructure operates effectively?

The continual evolvement of new technologies has revolutionised the ways in which security solutions are procured and implemented. The integration of data and telecommunications over IP-based networks now enables a more comprehensive approach to security solutions, with surveillance forming a key element of this. CCTV surveillance systems are a great example as many of them rely on transmission over IP networks, rather than traditional video circuit. Taking place from 14-17 May 2012 at

the NEC, Birmingham, UK, IFSEC International 2012, the world’s leading annual security event, will see more than 640 exhibitors and 25,000 security and transport professionals come together to discover the latest security innovations within the commercial security and fire safety industry. Whilst IP surveillance is not a new idea, it is

systems and businesses integrating both analogue and IP technologies to manage investment and facilitate current systems, creating hybrid solutions. Research conducted by business analysis

and consulting experts, Frost & Sullivan, into the future direction of convergence across the security industry, recently revealed that there is

now a fundamental need for security systems in the evolving security market place to come together. Some of the most interesting findings from the research are based upon fundamental changes to the decision-making process within industries which move from single products and systems to converged solutions. An example of this is the growing trend of

combining IP surveillance with access control capabilities. In Delhi, India’s second largest city, Indigo Vision’s (Hall 4, 4/D20) IP video surveillance solution has been implemented to ensure the smooth operation of its innovative Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The BRT traffic management technology enables the BRT buses to signal a green light to stay on at an upcoming intersection in order to stay on schedule and reduce travel time by up to 30%. The system also provides dedicated lanes for pedestrians and non-motorised vehicles, including bicycles and rickshaws, and allows operators to identify illegal use of the bus lane by motorists and ensure bus drivers abide by the rules and do not deviate from the prescribed routes.
