therapyspotlight Myofascial Release by Lisa Marlene M -

yofascial re- lease is a safe and effective

hands-on technique that involves applying gentle, sustained pres- sure into the body’s fas- cial restrictions in order

to eliminate pain and restore motion. Fascia is the soft tissue component of the connective tissue system that per- meates and supports the entire body. Its densely woven network of fibers covers and interpenetrates every muscle, bone and nerve, as well as the spinal cord and all internal organs, including the heart, lungs and brain.

In a normal, healthy state, the fas- cia appears relaxed and wavy, and has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. When individuals experi- ence physical or emotional trauma, scarring or inflammation however, the fascia can lose its pliability, becoming tight, restricted and a source of tension to the rest of the body.

Trauma, whether resulting from a fall, auto accident, whiplash or surgery; from habitually poor posture and re- petitive stress injuries; or from chronic emotional stress, has cumulative effects

on the body, caus- ing changes in the fascial system that can adversely influ- ence bodily comfort and functions. Fascial restrictions that exert excessive pressure on

nerves or muscles can cause numerous symptoms such as pain, headaches or restricted motion.

Fascial restrictions also affect flex- ibility and stability and are a determin- ing factor in the body’s ability to with- stand stress and perform daily activities. The goal of myofascial release therapy is to help individuals regain and main- tain well-being through functional, pain-free movement.
