Flea Market News Briefs New PBS Reality Show


A new PBS series set to debut this summer or fall, tentatively titled Market Wars, will pit professional antique dealers against each other as they travel to shops and fl ea markets around the country to fi nd the best vintage valuables and score the biggest profi ts on merchandise. Airing back to back with PBS’s long running staple Antiques Roadshow, Market Wars will have an initial run of 20 one- hour episodes. The dealer with the highest total profi t at auction at the end of each episode will be named the winner. ■


From the e Family Flea Know-How


The Charlotte Flea Market, located in Rochester, NY, operates seven days a week from 10 a.m to 6 p.m., excluding holidays. The market consists of two separate stores with 30 to 40 vendors each and features a wide range of merchandise, ideal for both buyers looking for affordable goods and those seeking higher-end items catered towards eBay shoppers. Owned and managed by three generations of the Truesdale family, the Charlotte Flea Market focuses on meeting the needs of the local community, but also draws customers from all over the region. ■


The Return of Sunnyside


The Sunnyside Swap Meet, which was a Fresno, CA tradition before closing in the mid 90s, reopened with new ownership in February. “I grew up here in Fresno, buying and selling out of Sunnyside when I was a kid,” says Bryan Parisi, who owns the swap meet with his father Frank. “At the time, it was the biggest and most popular swap meet in the Fresno area, with nearly 1,000 vendors in its prime.” With 11 acres of space available, the swap meet will initially have 250 vendor spaces. ■


Tag It Flea Market


The Tag It Flea Market in Medina, OH opened in August 2011, but for owners Roger and Katie Lewis, the fl ea market culture has been a part of their lives for much longer. “I put myself and my wife through college by doing fl ea markets on the weekends, so we’ve been doing them since we were straight out of high school and have always enjoyed it,” Roger Lewis says. “It was in our blood, so when we moved up north we decided to open our own fl ea market.” ■


Decatur-Moulton Flea


The Decatur-Moulton Flea Market, opening this March, will give Bonnie and Charles Thornton the opportunity to start over in Alabama. “We had a fl ea market for 25 years that we sold,” Bonnie Thornton says. “After being out of the business for years, we wanted to get back into it.” Open Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the cost for vendors will be $30 for the weekend or $100 a month. With about six acres for outdoor sellers and two large buildings for indoor dealers, the market will initially have space for about 300 vendors. ■


Shift in Shopper Priorities


A consumer survey conducted for STORES magazine by BIGinsight indicates that shoppers continue to pass on luxury products and are spending money on discount apparel and other more affordable items. A trend that has helped increase the popularity of fl ea markets across the country. The number of shoppers who consider discount apparel an untouchable budget cut, has risen from 43 percent in 2008 to 53 percent in 2011, as more consumers focus on getting the same goods at lower prices. ■
