Homes plan could cause roads chaos
RESIDENTS perturbed at the prospect of more housing being built in an already- overstretched area of Thurnham aired their views to local developer Hillreed Homes. Hillreed owns the freehold on land off
Ware Street, to the sides and back of ‘Fair- ways’ and bounded by the golf course at the rear.
The company’s strategic land manager, Al-
ister Hume, told the parish council up to 150 houses could be built on the 10-acre site, but stressed that at this stage it was not intend-
BEARSTED’s handyman has hit back at allegations aired during a recent parish council meeting. Dave Elstone, proprietor of
Weavering-based Clean and Tidy, was hired by the council last year to work on a variety of projects around the village, in- cluding cutting verges, trim- ming hedges and removing the resulting waste. Cllr Richard Ash argued that
Mr Elstone’s hours also needed trimming, as it was costing the council way beyond its allotted budget. He said Mr Elstone was working weekends and not just weekdays and claimed com- postable waste was being burned. Mr Elstone, who has been told
he must get approval to work more than 10 hours a week, said: “All work to date within the parish has been carried out following daily, often twice or three times daily, communica-
ing to apply for planning permission. But Dr Felicity Simpson, from Bearsted
and Thurnham Society, who was accompa- nied by eight other local residents, said: “This site is designated a special landscape area (SLA) in a strategic gap and is not suit- able for large-scale housing development.” Dr Simpson said the only argument for housing would be for social housing on a small scale. Of the Hillreed idea, she said: “This does not meet the needs and require- ments of the local people.”
Handyman hits back at council claims
tion with Cllr Jon Hughes and all work periods have been agreed prior to completion. “All compostable waste is
laid to compost at the Church Landway allotments. The only materials that are burned are those which will not compost, as agreed by all councillors in- volved in the interview process, to reduce disposal costs.” Mr Elstone said he appreci-
ated the council felt the need to monitor the works but said: “I feel the commentsmade by Cllr Ash may suggest to some that some form of scam to extract ad- ditional monies from the coun- cil was taking place. “Clean and Tidy takes great
pride in the work completed within the parish. The state- ments could be construed as an act of malicious falsehood, hav- ing a detrimental effect on my business and my livelihood.”
Local resident David Andrews, who lives
at Birling House, which adjoins theHillreed site, said the previous owner had been re- fused planning permission to put 58 houses on six acres of his land. Mr Andrews had since been approached
by Hillreed Homes regarding the possible sale of his property and had refused. In- stead, he had sought to protect the trees on his land with a tree preservation order. Concerned residents told the parish coun- cil that 150 more houses could mean 200
more cars and the increase in traffic would make Ware Street impassable, and residents would struggle to exit Averenches Drive. Add to this the extra traffic

from the new hospital to be built in Bearsted Road, and the lack of buses, and the situation would be chaotic, they said. Mr Hume said: “We have done
our homework on highways and access and think we could get good access without removing too many trees or degrading the bank.” But he stressed: “We have no
firm proposals and would like to hear what the parish councils have to say,” adding, “We are flexible in our thinking”. No discussions have yet taken
place with Bearsted and Thurn- ham Golf Club and parish coun- cil chairman Cllr Peter Waite said the council could not be seen as either supporting or re- jecting any proposals without more detail.
