Season’s Greetings from Sally

HOWthis year has flown by! Was it really 12 months ago that I was putting together Christmas entertainment for 2010? We’ve had such a busy year with lots going on and plenty of visitors to the town centre. The Classic Motorshow Preview was a great success in June and the MDA’s reporter, Nigel Canham, was pleased to show off his own pride and joy to Anne Widecombe before he went off to do a spot of expert judging for the Best in Show. Thank you to Nigel and Jenny Preece and all their helpers – as well as our mayor and the Booze Brothers for making the day such an enjoyable one for all. We’ve had everything from Macbeth to The

Boyfriend enacted in the Clock Tower Quarter and music ranging from Storm Brass to jazz to Spanish guitar. Shoppers like a touch of the continental, so we

were pleased to welcome Le Marche de France once again for the Town Criers’ competition. It has been great to see St Leonard’s Tower open throughout the summer as usual – with a few more added opportunities to look round on summer weekends. You’d be surprised how many Newton residents have never been inside. If you’re one of them – make a point of visiting next summer – the tower volunteers do a great job and they have all sorts of interesting facts to disclose about the tower in the town! Father Christmas will also be taking up residence in the tower once again this December and our volunteers will be preparing the grotto so that it’s as Christmassy as he would expect. The little ones are always thrilled to see the real Santa ‘at home’ so don’t forget to include a visit in your Christmas schedule. As usual and as you can tell, I am getting very excited indeed about Christmas – my favourite time of the year. This year you won’t be disap- pointed with what Newton Abbot has to offer. Don’t get caught out as many did last year – with ordering online – only to find that things didn’t arrive in time for Christmas. Our town is packed with shops – bursting with gifts to suit everyone and every budget. We have fewer empty shops than almost any town in the south west and as well as a great choice of shops we have a huge range of superb cafes, pubs and restaurants where you can rest and revive at intervals throughout the day. Unlike in many surrounding towns and cities, parking is now free every Sunday, so do take advantage of this and bring the whole family into town for some Christmas fun. I look forward to seeing you in town! Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy new
