In this ‘Celebratory year’ many breeders and growers have already earmarked 2012 as a ‘Golden’ time for the sale of their new varieties. The well publicised events of this forthcoming summer are reflected in much of the recent plant news which confirms the level of excitement being felt. The trick for many growers and nurseries will be to identify how to secure these retail plant sales throughout 2012. There is no question that social media has
arrived and begun to provide mind blowing opportunities within horticulture. Sales agents we speak to are moving plant material via Twitter and Facebook. It’s a
major leap from thumbing through the annual plant guide or trade media for information. The quality of nursery websites has also improved with many nurseries only selling on-line in 2012. It’s clear that the industry is grasping this new media with both hands and ensuring they are not left behind with a silent fax machine! We reflect on how this all works and the ramifications for the Planteria sector within our article on page 47. The annual schedule of European Plant
Fairs commenced in Essen last month with the 30th Anniversary of the IPMevent. Without question this remains the
outstanding event for the green sector. The level of global support is beyond comparison and we will report on this in the next edition. IPMwas followed by the two-day Groen- Direkt Spring fair in Boskoop and then Salon du Vegetal in Angers. All three events are a must for UK plant buyers – lets hope they use this opportunity to ensure that 2012 does become the ‘Golden’ year!
