TAKING TO THE STREETS

Holon Institute of Technology challenged students to express themes of social protest by filling urba spaces with light...

For their 2012 Lighting Workshop, the Interior Design Depart- ment at the Holon Institute of Technology, just south of Tel Aviv in Israel, took on the theme ‘Lighting Changes Reality (and if only for a moment...)’, encouraging students to devise light- ing events and installations inspired by social protests and civil discourse. Mixed groups of students worked together in interpreting terms, and concepts, such as social solidarity, group energy, transformation and social justice and expressing them through light. The Event was organised by a dedicated group of teachers, students, HIT’s staff, with Eran Klein, a prominent and leading Event Lighting Designer and owner of the Imagine studio provid- ing professional guidance. Finished schemes included:

Skyline recreated an urban scene composed of wobbly tents, abstract architecture and a shadow of a city’s skyline falling on the existing buildings in the background.

Here Comes the Light comprised a dark field of flower-like lights - traditional lighting bulbs sitting on iron rods that lit up during a simple, ceremonial performance of “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles.

The streets of Jerusalem’s Old City were transformed for seven days in June as artists from across the world created a series of illuminated spectacles for the Light in Jerusalem festival.

The final piece used the changing image of exposed fluorescent tubes bundled into a thorny composition hanging down a hollow vertical space. The tubes turned on and off dramatically to the powerful mixed sounds and beats of mass demonstrations. www.hit.ac.il
