As a senior Boeing leader in communication,
navigation, surveillance and air traffic management, his busy job includes hands-on development in aviation industry technical standards, recommendations to U.S. and European regulatory agencies for changes in regulatory criteria, processes and aircraft operations, and technology roadmaps and strategy. One of his most recent accomplishments was development of the 2010 trajectory based operations (TBO), central to optimizing the use of airspace, facilitating traffic flow, improving aircraft operating efficiencies, and providing tangible benefits to airline operators and navigation service providers. Nakamura’s material contribu- tions as a co-chair and subject matter expert reflected integration of aircraft capability with ground automation systems, so that air- borne capabilities that exist and ones in development are applied in the most effective manner through traffic and airspace with flow management capabilities for air traffic management. Trajec- tory operation is the hottest area surrounding advanced air traffic operations today within America’s national aviation authority’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and European Single European Skies programs. The FAA’s NextGen is the largest transformation of air traffic control ever attempted as thousands of airplanes and millions of passengers continue to fly safely. The last time this happened was after World War II and the world was on the cusp of the space race. As the co-chair of the global trajec- tory operations workgroup, Nakamura developed the concept and was one of the core subject matter experts on aircraft trajec- tory operations capabilities. He is recognized in industry for his unique ability to provide a balanced view between the desires of the airlines for cost efficiency, Air Navigation Service providers to deliver increased capacity with reduced delays, and demands from society for improved safety and reduced environmental impact. As senior technical fellow, Nakamura has achieved the highest technical honor bestowed upon Boeing employees and is also held in high esteem throughout the industry. Since 2003, he has been an invited speaker at industry forums, including the

lite development. The group supports iconic, household names such as Intelsat, Inmarsat, Sirius XM and DirecTV. Several years ago, when an Intelsat satellite pointed off the earth, Sun provided insight into the inner workings of the procedures used to recover the satellite, which has provided service

to customers ever since. On a recent visit to Intelsat’s operations center, he supported offset pointing procedures on a Sirius XM radio satellite. The satellite now provides Sirius XM with added orbit ascendancy. The Sirius fleet consists of four satellites: XM-3 and XM-4, that have replaced the first two satellites; XM-1 and XM-2, which now serve as in-orbit backups. These satellites deliver more than 135 satellite radio channels of commercial- free music, and premier sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic, weather, and data services to over 21 million subscribers. From 2007 to 2009, Sun worked on DirecTV 10 and DirecTV 11 Attitude Control Subsystems (ACS) and was responsible for mis- sion operations, team training and anomaly resolution. In 2006 to 2008, he worked on an internal research and development effort to develop next generation bus architecture, and Sun was responsible for analyzing system requirements, defining flight software architecture and prototyping flight control software. From 2005 to 2006 he led the Spaceway F1 and F2 Mission Shift and, in 2003 to 2005, was responsible for design of the ground operational procedures and supporting products for the Spaceway
