Hazelwood School, where creativity has no boundaries

Dynamic new theatre launched Oxted Young

Personʼs Theatre

THE Oxted Young Persons’ Theatre is a dynamic new youth theatre for young people aged between 11 and 19, based in the heart of Oxted. Rather than a standard stage school, we are a youth theatre that specialises in enabling young people to gain confidence, work collaboratively, learn about different drama techniques, meet professional actors and perform to audiences in youth theatre festivals. We also organise trips to West End theatres. Following the success of our taster workshops, we are running three different groups: 15-19-year-olds Mondays 5pm

to 6.30pm; 14+ SEN group Tuesday 7pm to 8.15pm (working out of the Orpheus centre); 11-14-year-olds Wednesdays 5pm to 6.30pm. “I loved everything, I can’t wait for the next one,” said Anna aged 12.

All our staff are qualified drama teachers with experience of working with youth theatres all over the country. We run weekly term time classes as well as half- term and holiday clubs. To take part in this unique experience, you can contact andree@oxtedyoungpersonsthe atre.co.uk or visit our website www.oxtedyoungpersonstheatr e.co.uk But hurry as places are going quickly!

‘WITH determination and practice, every person who dreams of being an artist CAN’ – that is the maxim greeting pupils as they enter the rather large, perhaps a little untidy but certainly colourful art room at Hazelwood School in Limpsfield. The room is crammed full of the paraphernalia associated with a place where works of art are created – sometimes within just a couple of hours – and dreams really can come true.

And it’s all thanks to art teacher Kate Tulett, an effervescent personality and enthusiastic artist, who inspires her pupils to abandon their inhibitions and really let their creativity shine.

“I genuinely love it,” she explained. “I have been teaching for 15 years but only now do I think I have the balance right.” Born in Doncaster, Kate obtained a teaching degree in art and design from Leeds University and spent time at an inner city school in Tottenham. She arrived at Hazelwood in September last year. At the moment she is working on an Alice in Wonderland theme, encouraging students to create collages, drawings and other artwork to add to a stunning wall display. “I have never been one to lead them down the same pathway,” Kate said. “I give them a starting point and let them choose the end. If they go off on a tangent it doesn’t matter.

“I only have two rules – there is no such thing as a mistake and

they are not allowed to use a ruler. There is no homework – they just love their art.” This is proved by the overflowing sketchbooks brought in by many of the children to show Kate before lessons begin. “We do not have to follow instructions,” said year six pupil Natalie Whyte. “We just do it and make it look nice.”

She added: “We don’t have to put paper down on the tables either. Mrs Tulett says it’s part of the art work.” Fellow student Zara McMillan simply said the lessons were fun, while Annabel Chappell explained that students did not have to stick to the rules.

Kate’s own daughter attends Hazelwood School and she is a member of the HPA (Hazelwood Parents’ Association). Not surprisingly, she gets very involved and was behind the creation of a giant fundraising tree, which adorns the side of one of the buildings and records each £2,000 collected with a red apple. Parents attended early morning workshops run by Kate to build the spectacular tree, which will be joined by others as money is raised to pay for various projects around the school.

Kate also runs an after school club and opens her classroom at

lunchtime for pupils to do extra work. She advises on various displays around the school and is asked to decorate rooms for special events. “I kind of get pulled into all sorts of things but I love doing things like that,” she said. It’s clear this remarkable teacher has immersed herself in all aspects of the school and is an inspiration to her students. The children simply love her classes – their creativity unrestricted by the strict boundaries imposed by some art teachers. And the results are there for all to see…on the walls of Hazelwood School.
