tindlenews.co.uk Green light for new recycling and waste service
TANDRIDGE District Council has given the go-ahead to a new recycling and waste service for the district, which will save the authority up to £1 million a year. The aim is also to enable residents to recycle more materials from home. The current recycling and waste service is provided by Biffa under a 14 year contract.
The changes will be brought in as part of a seven year review clause, which gives the council the chance to make changes, improve the service and identify possible savings.
From 1 October this year, the recycling and waste service will include: • Weekly collections of food waste from an animal proof container at the boundary
of the property.
• Alternate week collections of mixed recycling from a wheeled bin at the boundary of the property.
• Alternate week collections of residual waste from the rear of properties. According to the council, the new service will have benefits for residents including: • Meeting residents’ desire for increasing recycling and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.
• Being easier to use, as there will be no need to sort the recycling. It can all go into one bin.
• Free containers provided by Tandridge District Council for food waste and recycling materials.
• The weekly collection of food waste,
such as fruit and vegetable peelings and left over food.
• Being able to recycle a wider range of materials such as paper, cans, aerosols, foil, glass, tetra-paks and most plastics. • An increased recycling rate (currently 33%). Residents in other areas using similar schemes and their councils are recycling more than 60%. • Reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill by accepting more materials for recycling and collecting food waste. This has benefits for the environment and reduces landfill tax. • Reducing the mileage of collection vehicles and fuel use.
A recent survey of more than 4,000 households selected at random showed that

10 Brownies’ golden celebration
THE 2nd Edenbridge Brownie Pack celebrated its 50th birthday with a golden themed party.
The original headquarters registration certificate came to light recently and was handed to current Brownie pack leader Brown Owl Terri Scanes. Previous Brown Owls included Sister Teresa from St Andrew’s Convent and Pat Crocker of Ridgeway.
Funded from the proceeds of the stall held during the Christmas Shopping Extravaganza, a golden party was arranged to mark the occasion.
Yellow tablecloths, plates, cups, decorations and drinks were laid out in Rickards Hall before the girls arrived. Once all were assembled an order went to Tom Bell’s fish and chip shop and within minutes everyone was tucking into golden battered sausages or cod fillets!
Once the tables were cleared and the girls assisted in doing the washing up as part of their badge work, the unit’s new assistant leader, Rachael Fletcher, took her Promise and became a full adult member of Girlguiding UK as Snowy Owl.
Rachael (18) has helped with the unit for more than two years and is working towards a full qualification as an assistant leader having attended first aid and section training. She earned a Kent Youth Try Angle Award last summer and is currently helping to organise two weekend trips with the unit as well as taking part in the pack meetings.
If anyone else over the age of 18 would like to come and help run the Brownie pack or even open another unit please contact Brown Owl Terri Scanes on 01732 862198.
