Playtime is now an adventure


CHILDREN at Godstone Village School now have somewhere really exciting to play following the opening of their new adventure trail.


The trail costing £8,400 was officially opened by the oldest and youngest pupils at the school – Amy Parker (11) and Alfie Smith (four). The project to install the new equipment was launched by the Friends of Godstone Village

School two years ago. Money was raised through a wide range of activities with £3,000 coming from Godstone Fete Committee for running the tombola stall. “The children think it’s fantastic,” said Friends chair Denise Hendrie. “The idea is that they get some exercise in the winter months because it gets really muddy out there.”

A BRAND new youth club in Hurst Green and the people behind it have won high praise from community leaders. East Surrey MP Sam Gyimah, who officially opened the club in January, said it would not have come about without the tireless and energetic efforts of the volunteers or funding from Surrey County Council, Tandridge District Council and Churches Together in Oxted and District. “Judging by the number of young people in attendance and the energy during the launch of the youth centre, it was clearly the right call to have set it up and I am delighted to support and help promote it,” he said.


Neighbourhood specialist officer PC Bill Kirsch, who plans to drop in regularly, said he thought the club was fantastic and a great place for youngsters to have fun. “I couldn’t think of a better thing for them to do,” he said. “It epitomises the community spirit.”


Lead youth volunteer Tara Thomas said she had been delighted at the response from local youths and the public. A plea for volunteers resulted in 35 people coming forward.

“The first week I thought we would have about five or six young people but we had 28,” she said. “It’s been onwards and upwards since and it is going really well.” Eleven-year-old member Jamie said he thought the club was really good. “I like having somewhere to go instead of ending up on consoles,” he said. “This is more active and it’s not far to go.”

Local youngsters enjoy activities at the new club
