Focus on Organic Farming at TOFGA Conference

T

he annual Texas Organic Farmers and Gardeners Associa- tion (TOFGA) conference will be held from February 17 to 19, at the Mesquite Convention Center. Workshops cover all aspects of organic growing, with topics relevant to both large grow- ers and small family farms. In addition to farm tours, top- ics include organic certification, poultry production, greenhouse management, pest management and rainwater harvesting. A back- yard gardening workshop Saturday features a lineup of Dallas area experts such as Howard Garrett, Andrea Bithell, Dave Pennington and others. DFW is located in region four (of nine), led by Susie Mar- shall, of the Gleaning Network. TOFGA provides education and support for providers of organic and sustainable food in Texas. It provides marketing support and networking oppor- tunities to these producers in Texas. A big part of the support TOFGA provides for its members is its Disaster Relief Fund against state’s frequent droughts and fires.

Cost is $135 members/$185 non-members/$70 one-day pass. For more information or to register call 512-656-2456 or visit tofga.org.

Dart Riders are Happy with Service

ine out of 10 Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) customers say they’ll recommend the service to others, according to the results of a September 2011 satisfaction survey of more than 3,700 customers, conducted in person and online. The survey also reported an 87 percent general satisfaction, virtu- ally unchanged from the prior year. Other key findings from the survey say that 92 percent found the information they needed on the DART website; 90 percent found schedules easy to read; 77 percent believe buses are on schedule; and 92 percent report the trains run on time.

N Although 85 percent of customers said they feel safe

on many parts of the system, the agency is exploring ways to im- prove rid- ers’ sense of security. In addition to modify- ing deploy- ment plans

to increase police presence, the agency is continuing to install closed-circuit cameras at its stations, and is scheduled to complete the project in mid-2012. DART Police are also increasing their coordination with service-area city police departments, as well as federal law enforcement agencies. One particular effort with Dallas Police is aimed at reducing crime involving juveniles.
