T
he most difficult question and a question that I get asked all the time is ‘what type of music do you play?’, and even aſter nearly
30 years of playing to audiences, I still struggle with a suitable answer. I’m a girl (woman!) with a guitar, or sometimes a mandolin and a stomp box, and I write my own songs. It’s not folk, but it’s folky, it’s not blues, but there’s a bit of blues there and it’s not jazz, although there are jazzy tinges at times. I once got described as ‘genre hopping acoustic’, which probably is fairly accurate, but I have tried using that description a couple of times, and it was met with mild amusement...
So I’m a singer/songwriter then. With a guitar. Who’s a bit folky. Sometimes.
Tis new CD, ‘Stories of Angels & Guitars’ (Tomorrow Records, release 16th Jan 2012) is my fourth solo CD. It’s been two years in the making, so I’m looking forward to getting it out there. I had wanted it to be different from records I had made previously – I started with no deadline, without a pre-planned list of songs, intending to play all of the instruments and sing all the harmonies myself and only go to the studio once a
week...in other words, take the pressure right off. In the past, recording has always been a very rushed affair, with really tight deadlines and little room for experimentation, and I really wanted to move away from that approach and just see what came out in a relaxed environment.
