Anne Lumley is a freelance writer and parent to Sarah, her beautiful five year old, who is living with developmental disabilities. Anne spent most of her adult life as a full time mother to her oldest children, volunteering at their schools daily for over 15 years. In her free time, Anne was President and founder of a non-profit 501(c)3 small animal rescue that focused solely on the needs of shelter animals in North Carolina. In addition, Anne is currently pursuing an advanced collegiate degree and is working as a staff writer for an online marketing firm.

Anne’s focus shifted to concerns surrounding the special needs community when it became clear that Sarah’s physical, emotional, and psychological needs were significant and required substantial dedication. In providing for Sarah, Anne’s experiences with the public schools, state services, and accessible therapeutic programs have impressed upon her the necessity of acting as an advocate for those members of the developmentally disabled community who are unable to advocate for themselves.

Anne says, “When Sarah came into my life, I never anticipated what it would mean to day-to-day life to have a child who needs more of everything – more time, more attention, more patience, more advocacy….just ‘more’. And she’s worth every ounce I have to give. As are those who are like her. The more we educate and arm our families and ourselves with information about how to advocate for our most precious members, the greater the quality of care will be. Magazines like EMPOWERED go a long way in getting that message out there.”

Carole Shields is a freelance writer with varied background in public policy and philanthropic giving. She was the vice president of a public hospital system in Miami with a budget of more than half a billion dollars. Its goal is to provide highest quality care but most importantly to provide a safety net for individuals whose needs will not be met elsewhere.

She has testified before Congress and done many media interviews on such television outlets as CNN, MSNBC, and the Jim Lehrer Hour. The subject of these appearances focused mostly on the Bill of Rights and health care.

Carole has served on the White House Fellows review panels, the American Bar Association Commission on Justice. She worked for many years on staff at a philanthropic foundation and then for a number of years as a consultant for several more foundations. All of them included the health care field. She counts her work in the early development of hospice and AIDS care as among the most satisfying work of her career. The latter resulted in a chapter in a book about a dear friend and colleague who died of AIDS. Her interests include the development, treatment and distribution of cost-effective drugs for people living with or at risk of HIV. A trip to eleven countries in Africa with President Clinton to see centers funded by the Clinton Foundation continue to provide additional hope for the global mastering of this pandemic.

Carole says, “Involvement in EMPOWERED is a wonderful and unexpected serendipity. I did not know the publication, but I am so impressed with its contributions, and amazed by how it melds the practical information needed by people dependent on government help with thoughtful and inspiring focus on real people and their gifts and contributions to our society. It is a joy to be a part of the EMPOWERED world.”
