THE PARAMOUNT: YOUR NONPROFIT COMMUNITY THEATER Built in 1931 as a movie palace, The Paramount thrived through the middle decades of the

twentieth century, becoming Charlottesville’s premier gathering place for first-run movies, vaudeville acts, and musical offerings. But the 1960s saw many businesses moving away from downtown, and The Paramount suffered, finally closing in 1974. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, The Paramount was under continual threat of demolition, as developers considered various schemes. Fortunately, in 1990 a group of far-sighted community members came together to form a nonprofit organization to purchase the historic theater and to begin the long process of raising the considerable sums needed to restore, expand, and modernize The Paramount. Fourteen years later, after hundreds of Charlottesville residents gave thousands of volunteer hours and millions of dollars toward the project, The Paramount re-opened in December 2004. The Paramount wouldn’t have been restored without this community’s generous support, and it is only through that continued support that we can continue to achieve our goal: to Educate, Enchant, Enrich, and Enlighten. We encourage you to support The Paramount, your nonprofit, community theater.
