Last winter jobs
NOW that the leaves have fallen it’s a good time to check on those last outside jobs. Check out any gutters that you can safely reach and clean out leaves and other debris. Rake up the last of the garden leaves put them in a black plastic bag and water well, punch holes in the black bag and leave in a corner of the garden, water occasionally and the leaves will decompose to a useful garden mulch. Take in your outside hose and turn off the water to outside taps. Check on the insulation on your outside pipes. You can do so much to look after the local birds by setting up a bird bath and a bird feeder, and you can enjoy watching them all winter long. Have you brought in any tender plants? Geraniums can be lifted and stored in a warm dry frost free place and will bloom again next year. House plants should be moved away from window sills where they may be caught by the cold.
Bulbs
Now its time to think about choosing bulbs, Tulips, Daffodils, Alliums, Crocus etc. There are so many online sites available to allow you to choose your bulbs in the comfort of your armchair or you can enjoy an hour in the local garden centre if you prefer a more tactile approach. Do you make winter decorations for Christmas? A winter wreath or table decoration can be cheaply made from winter holly, Ivy and an old coat hanger. Take secateurs with you on a winter walk and a plastic bag or two to collect the holly and Ivy in. It is a race between you and the birds who gets the holy with the berries on, but holly does keep well in a little water so now is a good time to collect some ready for Christmas.
STATE PENSION CHANGES
The state pension age has been changing and this government has planned accelerated changes but following concerns raised by Age UK and other
groups some changes to the governments accelerated plans have been accepted. The latest position from the government web site
www.direct.gov.uk is as listed below.

Planned State Pension age increases Under the current law State Pension age will already increase to: 67 between 2034 and 2036
68 between 2044 and 2046
However, the government is considering how the State Pension age should be changed in the future. This may mean the timetable for increases to 67 and 68 will be revised. The government will bring forward proposals in due course.
These changes will affect many of us and will mean revisiting income needed for retirement and pension provision. Pension planning is a long term business and these changes will inevitably mean reworking planning provision.
