A year of celebration in store for Edenbridge

C

hristmas is a time of celebration. Although we are living through a difficult economic period I am sure that in a few weeks’ time we will be celebrating this Christmas with as much enjoyment and enthusiasm as we always do – children and grandchildren will not allow us to do anything else! The celebrations this Christmas will, however, begin a period of celebration, which will take us right the way through 2012. There will, of course, be the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, which will be taking place right across the country during the first weekend in June. With the additional Bank Holidays and all of the festivities, which will be taking place in London, happiness and enjoyment will be the order of the day on a national scale. We, here in Edenbridge, will be making our contribution to these celebrations as part of the Eden Valley Summer Festival, which will run from the 2nd to the 17th June and which promises to be much bigger and better than last year. Our Jubilee celebrations should, therefore, continue for two weeks! As the newly-constructed community centre in Four Elms Road should be opening at around this time, perhaps earlier in the spring, we might even be celebrating a bit earlier. This is a project, which has been years in the planning and construction, and its formal opening will be a significant event for Edenbridge to mark.

by Edenbridge Town Council chairman Clive Pearman No sooner will these

celebrations be over than we will be into the lead up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games in August and September. Being so close to East London and close to the route for many people travelling from the Continent to the Games, we should certainly notice an increase in the number of tourists in the area, which will, hopefully, give a boast to all our local shops and other services in the town. Again, this will certainly be something worth celebrating. I am sure that all of our shops and the other venues, particularly those where sport is played, will be doing their bit to make these celebrations equally memorable. And who knows – sometime later in the year we might even

have a new bandstand in Stangrove Park to celebrate, something the Town Band and other groups from the arts community in the parish have been after for years. That would be the real icing on the cake of a year of celebration. And then before you know it, after taking a short breath, we will be back preparing for the Christmas celebrations of 2012. But there’s not going to be another year of celebration like 2012 for a long time to come, so we’d better make the best of this one!
