The gem of beautiful Nidderdale ... and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
This charming market town nestles in the heart of Nidderdale, one of Britain’s supreme landscapes and a protected area which includes part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
You can explore the many independent shops including award-winning butchers, the Oldest Sweetshop in England and the pretty King’s Court, then savour local produce in snug tearooms and welcoming pubs, where you can sample real ale. For places to visit and eat out see pages 30-31.
Tucked away off the High Street are King Street Workshops in The Old Workhouse, a centre for arts and heritage with artists at work. The Nidderdale Museum is also housed in this heritage building, learn how people used to live in the Dales with imaginative displays which embrace Nidderdale’s industrial and agricultural heritage.
The tiny Playhouse, ‘Little Theatre of the Dales’, seats just 73 and began life as a Methodist Chapel in 1859, now it plays to enthusiastic audiences!
Pateley Bridge is an excellent base in the Dales to get your boots on and explore the many walks, riverside ambles, stunning moorland scenery and luscious

meadows – the town even has its own Walking Festival in September. Reservoirs too are plentiful with superb walks round Gouthwaite, Angram and Scar House (this is definitely bird watching country).
Close by is the monumental award winning sculpture of Coldstones Cut which opened in 2010. Winning the 2011 Marsh Awards for Excellence in Public Sculpture, Coldstones offers awesome views of Nidderdale and beyond from the array of viewing platforms.
Travel a little further down winding lanes and discover the spectacular limestone gorge of How Stean. Walkways and aerial footbridges lead to tunnels and dark caves to explore by torchlight.
Discover too one of Britain’s premier show caves Stump Cross Caverns with mighty stalactites and stalagmites, spectacular lighting and unusual rock formations.
The National Trust site of Brimham Rocks lies four miles to the east. This unique formation of amazing eroded rock covers an area of approximately 50 acres and is a great day out for families and climbers.
A host of events take place throughout the year including Nidderdale’s big day out, the Nidderdale Agricultural Show and a festive Children’s Lantern Parade which marks the start of the St Nicholas Festival where you possibly may see Santa!
