Stroll Knaresborough's quirky streets and you will find something different around each corner. Encounter tales of knights, royalty and colourful characters from days of old.


Inviting tea rooms and eateries, attractive shops and real ale pubs will tempt you to indulge in fine fare. Explore the Wednesday market where you will also find the Oldest Chemist Shop in England and Blind Jack, who lost his sight but became a pioneer of road building in the 18th century.


Look out for Guy Fawkes, King John and a Royalist cavalier among the new faces on the Town Windows trail. This public art uses trompe l'oeil (trick of the eye) paintings and illustrates characters and events from the town's rich history.

Close by is the church of St John the Baptist dating back to 1114 AD. After a Scottish raid it fell into disrepair. In 1328 King Edward III honey-mooning with his young bride Philippa in Knaresborough, arranged the reconstruction. Queen Philippa took great interest in the restoration work and the church became known as the Queen's Church.


Not for the faint-hearted, the Great Knaresborough Bed Race sees themed decorated beds racing through the streets and the summer FEVA (Festival of Entertainment & Visual Arts) entertains with street theatre, live music and art exhibitions. There is Medieval Living History Day and a Christmas Market, truly something for everyone.


The Royal Gardens of Goldsborough Hall, once home to HRH Princess Mary in the 1920's, lie on the outskirts and just 5 miles from Harrogate. With uninterrupted views and a quarter-mile long Lime Tree Walk, the gardens have been restored to their former glory.
