Ripon
The Cathedral City of the Dales
Full of rich cultural heritage, you will uncover stunning Georgian and medieval buildings, absorbing history and curious customs.
Ripon is one of the smallest cities in England, the beautiful Cathedral standing majestically in the heart. Created by Saint Wilfrid in AD 672, the original Saxon crypt remains to this day.
Visit the Workhouse Museum, Courthouse, Prison & Police Museum - in the footsteps of history, the heart- rending stories of the past come alive. Together they tell the story of law and order in Yorkshire.
A bustling Market day on Thursday is traditionally opened at 11am by Ripon’s own Bellman and you can enjoy the free daily heritage spectacular as the Ripon Hornblower still carries on the 1,000 year old tradition, of setting the night watch every evening at the four corners of the obelisk in the Market Place at 9pm.
Browse the charming medieval streets, filled with fascinating shops, feed your cultural cravings at the artist’s galleries on Kirkgate and indulge in homely tearooms.

Stroll along the canal and attractive marina with its wildlife area and nature walks - a Visitor Centre has recently been added - or try your luck at Ripon Races known as ‘Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse’.
The World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal and one of the finest examples of Georgian elegance, Newby Hall & Gardens are a short drive away. Also close by is the medieval house of Markenfield Hall with complete moat and Norton Conyers home of the Graham family, visited famously by Charlotte Bronte in 1839. The legend of a mad woman confined in the attics in the previous century is said to have given her the idea for the mad Mrs Rochester in 'Jane Eyre'.
Music, dance, culture, the Saint Wilfrid’s Procession and an International Festival are only a sample of the many events Ripon also has to entertain you ...
