capturemoments

WE ALL REMEMBER PICTURES MORE THAN WORDS It’s why photographs have an important impact on our lives, whether they are the ones we took, the

ones that inspire us or the pictures that define a moment in our world history. Memorable photographs fall into two categories. The ones taken of a moment in our lives, a defining moment or event that we look back on and say “those were the days”, and those historic pictures, reproduced time and time again to illustrate that moment when a picture captured an unforgettable moment. World events are often captured in one frame of a camera, in one fraction of a second, but

transforms the moment into an iconic part of our world history. Possibly one of the most famous, is the moment when the American Marines hoisted the American flag over Iwo Jima.

Other timeless classics include the image of Marilyn Munroe standing over the

grating, trying to keep her modesty when the dress billowed up around her. The tragic sinking of the Titanic is overshadowed by the powerful image of the

explosion of the Hindenburg, an example of where a picture helps us to remember the event much better than a wordy newspaper article. “If your pictures aren’t good enough,” war photographer Robert Capa used to say,

“you aren’t close enough.” His most memorable shots were taken on the morning of D-Day, 6th June, 1944, when he landed alongside the first waves of infantry at Omaha Beach. The one thing most of us fail to do, to ensure that picture that means so much to

you will have a lasting effect, is to write on them, or name them to let everyone know when it was taken, and the names of the people pictured there. How many pictures do you have stored away that are just that, pictures? Turn

them into memories by letting future generations know who is on that picture, and where it was taken.
