he ‘Ironmaster’ William Crawshay commissioned Cyfarthfa Castle in 1824.


This grand castellated mansion overlooked his immensely successful


ironworks and has been called ‘the most impressive monument of the Industrial Iron Age in South Wales’. Today, the museum houses extensive fine and decorative art collections and atmospheric social and industrial history galleries.


Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery All set in beautiful parkland on the


edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Housed in the building are a treasure chest of items


and stories about Merthyr Tydfil which has made a remarkable contribution to the history of Wales, Britain, and indeed the world. This is the town that produced cannons to help Nelson win at Trafalgar. This is the town where the Red Flag was first flown and the first Labour M.P., Keir Hardie was elected. This is the town where remarkable inventions such as the first steam train, the first steam whistle and the Sinclair C5 were made. This is the town that has produced great designers such as Laura Ashley and Julien MacDonald in the world of fashion. The museum also has a fabulous art collection which includes great artists from the town including Penry Williams, the ‘Welsh Turner’ and George Frederick Harris, the grandfather of Rolf Harris.
