monitoring has proved very successful to many of our customers, with greater customer retention, satisfaction and of course better revenues and profit margins for the central station.
Q. On an international platform, how do you see Monitoring in Ten years time and are there any pinch points to consider?
A. As the industry moves away from analogue DVR recording towards IP cameras with a local or cloud based NVR, I can see that the on site bandwidth requirements becoming a consideration with a network upgrade sometimes being required. This is often more of a concern for the installer than the monitoring station, since the station will only stream video from the site during activation. The bandwidth requirements of viewing high quality images from IP cameras over the internet are being mitigated by the wide adoption of H.264, which provides excellent quality video over low bandwidths.
Video analytics replacing external PIR detectors has finally come of age and in many cases this is proving a reliable means of reducing false alarms and increasing the effectiveness of the monitoring agent. As the costs for the analytics systems continue to reduce, I can see this becoming the standard way of deploying detection in the coming years.
Q. Smart Phones and other devices are now becoming common place, how do you see the proliferation of such devices and Apps changing the topology of security monitoring and response?
A. This has been several years in the making and it is now clear that there is significant demand for mobile apps to enable the customer to be part of the security of their site. To address this we have developed dedicated apps for the IPhone, IPad and Android devices which will be available as part of our Immix Cloud product. These enable the customer real-time viewing of their sites, with push alerts sent directly to their mobile device when an incident on their site has been detected or confirmed by the monitoring station. The apps also enable review of previous incidents and the ability to check in real time the security of their site.
Q. Finally, the IP UserGroup in the UK and the sister organisations in the USA and Latin America have taken on the role of educating, communicating and influencing the market as a whole around IP and network based security technology, as IP becomes more accepted, should we pack-up and go home or is there still much to be done?
A. The industry is continually expanding and there are still a huge number of traditional dialler based central stations and installers, many of which are unaware of video monitoring opportunities and IP networks in general. Your education programme goes a long way to help generate new customers for Sureview, so please continue the excellent work you are doing!
