propriately, but because of the question of gay mar- riage, this issue finds itself at the center of our national political discussion, even at a time when the nation is having serious financial difficulties, high unemploy- ment threatening to spin out of control, serious problems with education, with health care, with energy policies that put the nation in a com- promised position globally, and with a government that seems unable to cope with or even seriously address any of these issues. What is going on here? The LGBT discussion does

have relevance in the sense that the questions that are asked with this issue are the very ones we should be ap- plying to the larger national issues:

How does change happen? How do we help needed change happen?

How do we survive when needed change doesn’t happen? How do we work with oth- ers across different values for the common good? Three dynamic speakers will form a panel to address these questions as they apply to acceptance of the LGBT community within organized religion. The speakers come from three different traditions: Roman Catholic, Protestant (United Methodist) and Reconstruc- tionist Jewish. Two of the panelists work at Drexel University.

The panel discussion will be held at Calvary Center, corner of 48th & Baltimore (#34 trolley stops right in front at 48th Street), Thursday evening, in the rear auditorium, October 27, 2011 from 7-9 PM. The panel presentation will be followed by a question and answer period and small group discussions. There will be handouts and light refreshments. All are welcome. It is sure to be an absorbing discussion. The event is co-sponsored by Kol Tzedek West Philadel- phia Synagogue and Calvary United Methodist Church in conjunction with LGBT His- tory Month. For more infor- mation, please call Calvary United Methodist Church at 215-724-1702 and leave a message if no one answers, someone will get back to you!
