pruce Hill and Woodland Terrace residents packed the Spruce Hill Community Association’s 45th Street head- quarters for the SHCA monthly zoning committee meeting last Thursday, October 13th. After four other zoning issues had been considered, developer Jonathon Weiss of Equinox Management and Construction and his team presented plans for the proposed Azalea Garden Apartments at 400 South 40th Street. University of the Sciences D

r. Joseph W. Ruane was presented with the Honor- ary Alumnus Award at
University of the Sciences’ annual alumni reunion on Sept. 24, 2011. The award is bestowed annually to a non-alumnus who has shown exemplary dedication and com- mitment to the mission of the university.
For the past 40 years, Dr. Ruane has made a lasting impression at the university, through founding the Department of Social Sci- ence, the minors program, over
30 courses, and the psychology major. Dr. Ruane also serves on the USciences institutional review board.
Although he is a professor of so- ciology and health, he has exem- plifi ed great commitment to the students, which includes helping to start the Black Student Union, and later the Association of Latin American Students. In the community, he was presi- dent of Spruce Hill Community, founder and president of the West Philadelphia Community FCU, on the board of the West Philadel- phia Consortium, past president continued on page 4
