NOTEworthy
Twenty-five years ago, I was a very typical American Jew. I had a strong Jewish identity. As a student of the Holocaust and historical “Christian” persecution, I bristled at the mention of Jesus Christ, yet I was not religious. I did not have a relationship with the God of my fathers, nor was I like the minority of pious Jews who believe the Hebrew Scriptures, love the God of Abraham, and try to live a holy life. No one had ever shared the Gospel with me, so the only thing I knew of Jesus was that His followers hated the Jews.
Like so many Jews today, I was liberal in my worldview. This liberalism is frustrating to conservative Christians. Why are so many Jews liberal Democrats? Although most are unaware of it, our biblical heritage has played a great role in forming a strong affinity for humanitarian causes. This is what separated us as a people from the barbaric and savage tribes when God redeemed us out of Egypt and revealed the way He would have us live. Care for the needy, compassion for the suffering, striving for justice, and seeking to create peace are virtues passed on from generation to generation. As the prophet Micah spoke: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to

love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). In Jewish ethics, righteousness is giving and doing, healing and making whole. I can see today as a born- again Believer in Yeshua that “good” is not always God. However, without God’s wisdom, it is difficult to discern the difference.
When I found out that Yeshua (Jesus) was the long-awaited Messiah of Israel, and the Bible was the true, inspired Word of God, I was like those in Nehemiah’s day when Ezra read the book of the law before the people for hours and hours, and they blessed and worshiped the Lord—I embraced Him with all my heart, soul, and might, and have never put His Book down!
It may seem that American Jews and conservative Christians are worlds apart (and, in fact, they are); however, most have never heard a recognizable Gospel message about a recognizable Jewish Messiah, and would love to meet Yeshua, their Kinsman Redeemer. This issue will help us bridge the gap.
