YLW NEWS
CONTRACT AWARD AND EXPANSION OF INTERNATIONAL ARRIVALS AREA
If you have recently arrived at YLW on a flight from Seattle, Las Vegas or Mexico, you may have noticed the International Arrivals area can be a little crowded. Over the years, with increased passenger numbers, larger aircraft and more international flights serving YLW, this area has exceeded its capacity from when it was built in 1992. Prior to that, passengers would line up outside after deplaning and go through Canada Customs - even in the snow and rain.
Good news... as a part of the Drive to 1.6 Million Passengers Airport Development Program, Phase 1 of the Kelowna Air Terminal Building Expansion Project has begun. This project consists of an expansion to the north of the terminal to provide a new Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) Primary Inspection area for screening
international arriving passengers. It’s a one storey addition filled primarily with a screening hall, as well as a mechanical and electrical room which will serve the north half of the terminal, public washrooms, and an extension to the airside corridor.
Delnor Construction was awarded the $4.8 million contract. “We are pleased to have Delnor Construction begin this project,” says Airport Director Sam Samaddar. “Delnor comes to YLW with significant experience including airport construction at Edmonton International. They will help ensure disruptions to passengers during construction are kept to a minimum.”
Passengers will have the opportunity to enjoy the new International Arrivals area by the fall of 2012.
SAFETY AT OUR CROSS WALKS PEDESTRIAN AND DRIVER AWARENESS
To help keep pedestrians safer and slow down vehicle traffic in front of the terminal, high visibility safety signs have been placed at crosswalks in front of the terminal building.
